Bruising and Hemorrhage

Species affected: All
Background: Traumatic injury and disruption of blood vessels. In most cases the blood will eventually clot, the vessels will close and the bleeding will stop. However some animals may have clotting disorders and continue to bleed. Rat/mouse poison can also cause chronic bruising and hemorrhage.
Symptoms: Bruising, hemorrhage.
Diagnostics: Physical exam.
Special Notes: Certain breeds and families are known to carry recessive traits for hemophilia; these disorders should be ruled out whenever there is unexplained bleeding or bruising. It should always be determined whether rat/mouse poison was available.
Principles for Supplementation: Natural treatment of trauma involves supplying nutrients for healing, as well as anti-inflammatory compounds for pain and healing.

Over Worked, Strained Tendons and Sprains

Species affected: All (most common in horses)
Background: Many such injuries have predisposing factors that are the true cause of damage. Poor conformation puts excess stress on certain body parts. Often the injury results from a fall, improper maneuver or effort that leads to damage.
Symptoms: Pain, lameness, swelling.
Diagnostics: Palpation, ultrasound.
Special Notes: When the tendons and ligaments become weakened from such causes as poor nutrition, mineral or vitamin deficiencies, lack of exercise and conditioning, they are more likely to be damaged or torn.
