Gastriplex

Diarrhea in dogs and cats is common. Some will have chronic soft stools or diarrhea, which can be either relatively constant on a day-to-day basis. Others will have frequent bouts of diarrhea that occurs from several times a year to several times each month. It is common for dogs and cats to have an increased sensitivity to foods, where any change of food will lead to gastrointestinal problems. Frequently, one can see diarrhea due to bacteria or parasites (Giardia, for example). All of these animals have in common a weak digestive tract, often chronically inflamed and with various degrees of maldigestion.

This formula is designed to support and heal the gastrointestinal system, including the stomach, small intestines and colon. Glutamine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is the preferred fuel for small intestine mucosal cells (and to a lesser extent, the large intestinal mucosal cells). Glutamine has been shown to treat diarrhea in many species, including people and calves. Slippery elm contains viscid mucilage polysaccharide which sooth the mucous membranes of the gut. Licorice heals stomach ulcers and reduces inflammation throughout the gut. Lactobacillus is well known to promote a health microbial flora of the intestinal tract. Unfortunately, Lactobacillus acidophilus will mostly be destroyed in the acidic environment of the stomach. Lactobacillus sporogenes safely passes through the stomach and sporulates in the small intestine, producing L(+)lactic acid, which is metabolized to glycogen, creating a health micro environment for normal gut flora. Saccharomyces boulardii is a beneficial yeast. N-acetyl D-Glucosamine has been shown to be of benefit in treating inflammatory bowel disease and colitis. Quercetin enhances cell growth and turnover, and reduces lipid peroxidation and membrane damage. Quercetin is a flavonoid, and flavonoids can reduce chronic inflammation as is encountered in the intestinal tract.
